London-based musician Léon Charles is a highly versatile and experienced Pianist, Keyboardist, Organist, Accompanist, Composer/Songwriter, Orchestrator, Arranger, Vocal Coach & Musical Director/Conductor, having received his early musical training at The Purcell School of Music & Cambridge University.

He is a highly active as a soloist, having performed as an Organist in every major UK Cathedral, as an accompanist and orchestral player across the UK and abroad, in the West End, on tour and on film as a Pianist/Keyboardist and MD, and he has provided extensive Orchestrations & Arrangements for concert, stage & screen, including Decca Records, Craig Ogden, The King's Singers, Alfie Boe, Jack Topping, The Classical Brit Awards, The Alan Titchmarsh Show & Classic FM (A Night at the Movies).

Léon is currently on tour with "Dirty Rotten Scoundrelsplaying throughout the UK and Ireland. He is working on the production as Deputy Musical Director & Keys 2. Tickets and venue details available here.

He also recently contributed orchestrations to the recently-released albums "Rock Meets Classic 2" from Deutsche Gramophone and Collabro's "Act Two" from Syco.

 

 

February 3rd 2015 

Léon has been working since January 2015 as a regular deputy on Principal Keyboard for the West End production of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory".
 
 
 

January 12th 2015 

Over November & December 2014, Léon worked on the new Musical "The Realness" produced jointly by The Big House and Big Broad Productions. The show played at the Hackney Downs Studios with a book by Maureen Chadwick & David Watson, Music & Lyrics by Kath Gotts and Direction by Maggie Norris. He worked on the show deputising as Musical Director and Keyboardist.
 
Léon has also been working since November 2014 as a regular deputy on 2nd Keyboard for the West End production of "Miss Saigon".
 
 
 

October 15th 2014 

Léon recently provided vocal arrangements for the Jonny Wilkinson Testimonial London dinner at the Grosvenor House Hotel in September, performed by Alfie Boe, Laura Wright, Collabro & Gospel Choir.
 
In June, he contributed orchestrations to the charity fundraising concert Symfunny held at the Royal Albert Hall in June, organised by Parkinson's UK.
 
Léon has also been working since October 2013 as a regular deputy on Principal Keyboard for the West End production of "Wicked".
 
 
 

May 1st 2014 

Léon has been recently working with the Royal Ballet Company playing for classes and as rehearsal pianist on the world première of Christopher Wheeldon & Joby Talbot's production of "The Winter's Tale" and also for the upcoming production of Tchaikovsky's "Sérénade".
 
In March of this year, he also contributed orchestrations for the second year to Classic FM's A Night at the Movies concert at Methodist Central Hall, which was broadcast on radio.
 
From October 2013 to March 2014, he worked as Assistant Musical Director on the Menier Chocolate Factory's production of "Candide".

 

 

October 20th 2013

Léon recently contributed orchestrations to the Classic Brit Awards tribute to Hans Zimmer, which was performed live at the Royal Albert Hall and broadcast on Classic FM & ITV earlier this month, and also to Classic FM's A Night at the Movies concert at Cadogan Hall in May, also broadcast on radio.

He also co-orchestrated tracks for the upcoming debut album of UK Treble Jack Topping, due to be released in November.

 

 

February 28th 2013

Léon is providing the Organ, Brass & Vocal arrangements for the congregational items for the Enthronement of Archbishop Justin Welby which will be held in Canterbury Cathedral on March 21st 2013. The service will be broadcast live on BBC2 at 14:30.

Léon is currently on tour with "High Societyplaying throughout the UK and Ireland. He is working on the production as Associate Musical Director & Keys 2, and from Cardiff onwards (mid March), will be Musical Director for six out of seven performances per week in every venue. January 8th 2013

Currently playing in UK cinemas, Léon worked on the feature film "Quartet" staring Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Billy Connolly, Pauline Collins, Michael Gambon, Sheridan Smith, Andrew Sachs & Gwyneth Jones in late 2011-2012, where he served as on-set Musical Consultant/Advisor and Opera Coach. He is also heard throughout the film as soundtrack pianist, and on the accompanying soundtrack album available here.

 

 

November 30th 2012


Léon has recently worked as rehearsal pianist for the upcoming production of "Hello, Dolly!" at the Curve Theatre, Leicester. This production will star Janie Dee as Dolly Levi, with Direction by Paul Kerryson, Musical Direction by Ben Atkinson and Choreography by David Needham.

Léon will be again be appearing as Musical Director/Arranger & Accompanist to London-based singer Peter French for his new evening one man show "A Year To Christmas" on September 24th 2012 for one night only at The Pheasantry, 152 Kings Road, Chelsea, London, SW3 4UT.

The story follows a life in a year of someone from one christmas to the next through the seasons and through some of the major events and news stories of the last year.

Featuring classic songs from every single decade since the 1920's up to the present day, there is something for everyone in the programme - including songs from EY Harburg & Vernon Duke, Rodgers & Hart, Lerner & Loewe, George & Ira Gershwin, Burt Bacharach & Hal David, Stevie Wonder, Carole King, The Eagles, Tom Baxter and Gary Barlow.

This concert will look at the many faces of love through the songs of well known composers such as Burt Bacharach, Cole Porter, John Lennon, Jacques Brel, Joni Mitchell, Irving Berlin,Rogers and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Leslie Bricusse and others.

The concept is to follow a journey of love and relationships with songs that reflect that story.

Audition Services

Léon offers full services for singers & instrumentalists in audition preparation, be it for theatre productions or college/conservatoire entrance. This includes custom arrangements and transpositions to a suitable key of existing material, or full transcriptions where the sheet music may not be available - this can be done entirely via email if desired or necessary. Rehearsal coaching/recording also offered - Last-minute and emergency requests welcome!
